GE9X – One mighty beast takes to the skies
The next generation Boeing 777X high bypass turbofan engine, GE9X, has completed its first flight onboard a Boeing 747 in Victorville, California. It is expected that the GE9X, will provide a fuel efficiency improvement of around 10% over the GE90 in use on current generation 777 aircraft. This first flight marks the begging of inflight testing which will lead to engine certification and release for use by airlines. This rigorous process will involve the testing of the engine at various altitudes and configurations to collect performance data, and ensure reliability in commercial operation. It is expected that certification will be achieved in 2019, GE is already expecting some 700 orders in the books.
